In my mind, every journey leads me closer to you
Continuing my trip back through the 1986 album charts
28/09/86 : Break Every Rule - Tina Turner
Our third visit with Tina - I never used to be a fan back in the day and it's fair to say that our visits have done absolutely nothing to convince me otherwise, so my expectations are not high for this.
Yeah - none of it's hateful and I did do some toe-tapping, but it's all very samey and I can't imagine why anyone needed it in their lives. But I'm happy if they did - they weren't hurting anyone. She's got very scary hair on the album cover though - I'm not sure it needed to be quite that big.
We're at #6 in the charts this week on her third week of an incredible 48 week run, with #2 in her debut week being as high as it got - interestingly it only spent its first five weeks in the top 20, but it hung around the lower reaches of the chart for a very long time. The top five this week were Paul Simon (starting a run of five weeks at the top), Five Star, Eurythmics, Now 7 and Madonna and the highest new entry was Billy Bragg (#8 - which is the highest he's ever been in the album charts).
Wikipedia has a reasonable amount on the album but it's all about how successful it was or how famous the people involved on it were. There are some pretty big names involved though - Bryan Adams, Mark Knopfler, Phil Collins, David Bowie, Branford Marsalis and Steve Winwood are all involved in a variety of capacities. There's also a lesser known big name involved as well with Tessa Niles providing backing vocals - check out that girl's Wikipedia entry! The album was very successful as well getting to #1 in Finland, Germany, Spain and Sweden and #8 in the US - she also played in front of 180,000 people in Rio as part of the supporting tour.
"Customers also listened to" only Ike & Tina Turner albums apparently, which feels like a very surprising situation to me. I'm just not a Tina fan but I have to admit it's not horrible - the lovely Mrs Reed was telling me she likes it though, so I guess I should just be thankful I haven't been subjected to it more.
21/09/86 - Fine, but forgettable
05/10/86 - Exactly what you'd expect
