You, me, everybody!

Continuing my trip back through the 1965 album charts.

19/09/65 : The Rolling Stones No. 2 - The Rolling Stones

This is our fourteenth visit with The Stones (bringing them tied into second place with Frank) and our second this year but it's fair to say my expectations are not high - unless I'm much mistaken it will be a load of muddy sounding US blues tracks.

Actually, it's a bit of a pleasant surprise because it's not massively muddy sounding and it's more R&B than just B. It opens with an enjoyable version of "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love" - I obviously knew it wasn't originally done by The Blues Brothers, but I didn't know it was originally a Solomon Burke number (in '64) and I also didn't know The Stones were one of the first acts to cover it.  It then surprises me with a cover of Chuck Berry's "You Can't Catch Me" which I'm not aware I've ever heard, but I recognised some of the lyrics because John Lennon borrowed them for "Come Together" ("here come old flat-top...") and there's also a decent cover of "Under The Boardwalk" on there as well. Most of the rest of the tracks are also covers, but there are three Jagger/Richards original numbers on there - and I'm pleased to say none of them are terrible. All in all, to my astonishment, I really didn't mind this.

We're at #15 in the charts this week on their 36th week of an impressive 37 week run with it having spent ten of those weeks at #1, which feels slightly generous of the record-buying public. The top five this week were The BeatlesTSOMMary PoppinsAndy Williams and Bob Dylan and we have a whole load of new entries for Roy Orbison (#12), Elvis Presley (#16), The Beach Boys (#17) and Adam Faith (#19).

Wikipedia tells us, somewhat unsurprisingly, that this is their second album and some of the other covers were written by Jerry Lieber, Muddy Waters and Allen Touissant. That's about all there is in terms of interesting content - the critical reception was decent and it did well commercially, getting to #1 in Germany and Italy as well and #5 in the US, under a different name but with mostly the same tracks.

"Customers also listened to" "no similar recommendations" which I guess I can go along with because we've not really seen too much like this so far. I can't say I loved this but I found it considerably more listenable than their later album from this year - there's not a lot wrong with it, but I still can't quite see how it spent ten weeks at #1.

12/09/65 - Not what I was expecting
26/09/65 - A decent enough first visit
