Tell me what’d I say?

Continuing my trip back through the 1961 album charts.

10/09/61 : Listen To Cliff! - Cliff Richard

Oh good - it's more Cliff.  Sigh - 1961 really hates me, doesn't it?  I'm expecting this to sound dated, but not hateful - that feels like the best I can hope for.  It's a very bossy album title though!

It's a strange mix of rock and roll, crooning and cabaret singing - as though he can't decide if he wants to be Elvis or Frank.  It's not great, but it's certainly not hateful - it's mostly just old covers with the album containing the third version we've met of both "Unchained Melody" (although it's been mentioned a lot in our most streamed tracks list) and "Blue Moon" (the second this year!).  Doesn't he look so young though?!?

We're at #10 in the chart this week on his 22nd week of a 26 week run, with it having peaked at #2 (as part of a ten week run in the top five - people really liked Cliff back then!).  The top five this week were George Mitchell (sigh - do you know there's only going to be one week this year where I don't mention him?), South PacificElvisThe Shadows (a new entry) and Oliver! and there are no other new entries in the chart, leaving us at four albums we have yet to experience.

Wikipedia has very little about this - it's his third album and it's got the Shadows on it but it seems like they don't get named on his work, but he gets named on their work.  Interestingly, there were no singles released from this album - which seems odd because he was releasing plenty of singles at the time, but he just wasn't putting them on albums.

"Customers also listened to" albums by Cliff, Cliff & The Shadows and Cliff & The Drifters - those fans really know what they like.  And, quite frankly, they're welcome to him - but even I have to admit this isn't dreadful.

03/09/61 - A most peculiar album
17/09/61 - More of the same, but a bit different
