I never should have settled down hanging around in a one-horse town

Continuing my trip back through the 2003 album charts.

13/07/03 : So Much For The City - The Thrills

This is another one I owned (taking us to four for the year) - however, this one I recall liking. I've not even thought about it in years though, so I'm looking forward to reminding myself of it.

Yeah, this was an enjoyable revisit. I really liked "One Horse Town" and "Santa Cruz (Not That Far)" (which finishes in an amusing way with it sounding like they're about to start another banjo riff until someone just shouts "end it!") but the whole album was fun. I was reminded of Dodgy or Gomez in that they're not the greatest musicians and it's not going to change the world, but it's just a bit of fun to be enjoyed with a really nice summery festival sound to it. It's a nicely retro album cover as well.

We're at #6 in the charts this week on their second week of an impressive 37 week run, with it having peaked at #3 in its debut week. The top five this week were BeyoncéThe Darkness (a new entry), Delta Goodrem, an Osmonds best-of (really?) and Kings Of Leon (another new entry) with the next highest new entry being Ocean Colour Scene (#14).

Wikipedia tells us it's their debut album and it did very well in Ireland - and that's about it. The critics were nice enough about it but it only really did anything here and in Ireland (#1) - the next highest placing was #23 in Sweden. Checking out their entry, their second album did OK but after that it all went a bit wrong for them and they called it a day (sorry, "went on a hiatus") in '08.

"Customers also listened to" Delays, The Electric Soft Parade, The Music and The Upper Room - and I can tell you nothing about any of them. I'd totally forgotten about The Thrills until I bumped into this but it was a very enjoyable reminder - there are some decent fun tracks on this and it's got a nice vibe to it. I'm gonna go as far as calling this out as a recommendation if you want some early 00's indie vibes and you don't know this - it's the sort of thing I was hoping to get from this year but there's been remarkably little of it so far.

06/07/23 - One I somehow missed at the time
20/07/03 - An enjoyable revisit
