You want it, she's got it
Continuing my trip back through the 2003 album charts.
20/07/03 : Youth And Young Manhood - Kings Of Leon
After having owned the first two albums of the year, we have to wait until July before we get to the next one (taking us, unsurprisingly, up to three). It's not an album I listened to more than once or twice, so I'm not sure I particularly liked it - but let's see how our third visit with the Tennessee brothers goes, shall we?
Ah yes - I remember now I bought this because of "California Waiting", "Molly's Chambers" and "Holy Roller Novocaine" but the rest of it, whilst still fine, just isn't quite up to that level and the vocal style does get a bit annoying by the end of the album. However, three decent tracks isn't a terrible haul and it is a pretty well crafted album so it was nice to revisit it after all these years - but that will be it for another twenty years or so, I reckon. It's not a good album cover to show against a white background though, is it?
We're at #3 in the charts this week on their second week of an impressive twenty week run - somehow it's spent 63 weeks in the charts over the years, with it last being seen for a single week in '14. The rest of the top five were Beyoncé, Delta Goodrem, The Darkness and a George Benson best-of (no-one expected that now, did they?) and, somewhat surprisingly, the highest new entry was a Manic Street Preachers collection of b-sides (#14 - that many people cared?!?).
Wikipedia doesn't have a whole lot on the album - it's their debut album (they're up to nine now) and that's about it! The critics were very nice about it, particularly over here and commercially it did best over here as well, with #18 in Ireland being the highest it achieved elsewhere - it only got to #113 in the US (which seems a bit weird for such a US sound).
"Customers also listened to" The White Stripes, The Black Keys, The Strokes and Kasabian - I can certainly see the link to all of them. As I said, I enjoyed this revisit (and "Molly's Chambers" was added to my playlist as a result) but I can't imagine listening to the whole album too many times.
13/07/03 - An enjoyable revisit for one I'd completely forgotten about
27/07/03 - A lovely voice
