Well, they said you was high-classed - well, that was just a lie

Starting my trip back through the 1958 album charts.

28/12/58 : Elvis' Golden Records - Elvis Presley

Well, since we're back in '58 it seems only fitting that we have an Elvis album and it's a best-of - under normal circumstances it would be rejected. But '58 ain't no normal circumstances...

I don't really need to tell you about this do I? There were tracks I didn't recognise but that's just me being an ignoramus - it's Elvis, baby! If you want some classic rock and roll then this delivers in spades - yes, in any other year, it would have been rejected but I was perfectly happy to break the rules here..

We're at #3 in the charts this week on his 13th week of a 15 week run, with it having peaked at #2 in his third week - all of which are pretty puny numbers for The King, but he did manage another 35 weeks over the next 19 years, with it last being seen in '77 (and we all know why that was). The rest of the top five were the soundtracks to South Pacific, My Fair Lady and Oh Boy! and (of course) Frank Sinatra and there are no new entries in the entire chart, which is only a top ten at this time (and we've already met half of it, so this may be a short year!)

Wikipedia has more volume but less content than you might expect - the only facts of interest are that he put all these tracks out in '56 and '57 and it's widely regarded as the first greatest hits album (and there are certainly worse places they could have started). There's no word on critical review (was that even a job at this time?) and the commercial performance was interesting because whilst it got to #3 in the US, it sold SIX MILLION copies. Things were certainly different back then.

"Customers also listened to" some very, very random albums - I've no idea what's going on there. But there's no denying that Elvis delivered back in the day - this is pure class.

21/12/58 - nothing of particular note
2015 - over and out!
