What's that coming over the hill? Is it a monster?
Continuing my trip up #album-of-the-day...
I remember enjoying this, without remembering any of the artists on the album just at this point in time!
A nice mix of bands and tracks - some of whom went on to bigger and better things. And some of whom very much didn't. But a fine choice nonetheless, sir!
The album cover is quite amusing given that NME definitely did a good job in picking some bands that went on to great things, but they then chose to give The Automatic and Razorlight top billing, which wasn't necessarily their best move. The channel gave it no emojis but a couple of positive comments to make up for that. Wikipedia doesn't have a lot on the album, but it surprised me by telling me there were 40 tracks on the album, but there were only 24 tracks on Spotify and only 19 on Amazon, so I'm feeling a bit hard done by. One other thing I noticed is that it appears that NME only did this in 2005 and 2006 - it feels like it would be a good series to have run for longer (but I bet getting it all agreed is a massive pain, which is probably why it didn't)
"Customers also listen to" a load of bands that feature on the album - nobody expected that now, did they? It's a fine selection of music from the time which only looks finer when you consider how many of them are still going - I enjoyed revisiting that era.
21.09.29 : Crush - Floating Points (2019)
I don't remember this one at all - a re-listen may be in order unless my channel comment brings it all back...
yeah, i liked that - cheers!
...which it doesn't, so I gave it a quick revisit. Yeah, it's a nicely bleepy thing which was pretty much what I was expecting from the name - it reminded me of Orbital, who are one of my favourite bleepy bands. I like the album cover as well. The channel gave it five thumbs up and seven nices, so they obviously liked it too. Wikipedia doesn't give a lot of detail on the album - apparently it came out of the improvisational sets he played supporting The xx on tour. The critics generally loved it (lots of "best of 2019" lists featured it) whilst the public were a bit more "meh" (#37 in the UK).
"Customers also listened to" Four Tet, Jan Jelinek and Ross From Friends (which is a good name, if not necessarily true). I liked this though - it was a fine introduction and I'll check out more of his stuff if I remember to do so.
21.09.30 : Everything Touching - Tall Ships (2012)
I remember enjoying this one, but I never wrote a comment in the channel, so another re-listen was required to remind myself why I liked it. I remembered it being slightly fey indie but it turns out that was only partially right - some bits of it have got quite a Klaxons feel, which nobody would describe it as fey, but other bits certainly lean towards slightly wetter indie. Overall, I'd say I liked it, but it feels pretty forgettable. The channel gave it three thumbs up and a couple of positive comments.
Wikipedia doesn't have anything on the album but tells us that they released this, disappeared for three years ("emotional, financial and physical hindrance" was involved apparently), released their second album and then called it a day. And I'll be honest - the whole thing doesn't sound like they particularly enjoyed any of it.
"Customers also listened to" the largest selection of bands that I've never heard of that I've seen in a long time - it really was quite an impressive list, with no bands having more than one entry. I didn't mind this, but have already forgotten what it sounded like, if I'm being honest.
Hmmm - so a tricky one. I like a good compilation album and the NME offering is a good compilation album (even if I only got to hear half of it) but does it deserve to win? The competition put up a decent effort as well - yes, I wasn't previously familiar with either of them but I didn't mind them at all. Upon deep consideration, I don't feel I can give it to the compilation effort so it's going to Floating Points - some bits of that were right up my street. It is somewhat lacking in lyrics though, so I'll give that to a guilty pleasure from 2006.
21.09.23 - A comedy record?!?
21.10.01 - We're back on the testosterone, aren't we?
