You make me feel funny when you come around
Continuing my trip back through the 2001 album charts.
09/12/01 : World Of Our Own - Westlife
Well, S Club 7 might have halted the downward slide in expectations, but we're back in freefall again and no mistake - although, my last visit with the lads (this is our fourth) was greeted with surprise because it didn't make me want to poke my eyes out. So I can only hope for such greatness again!
Woah - I'm super pleased to report that my eyes remain intact. This isn't completely dreadful - but, and I can't stress this enough, it's really not great. The music isn't to my taste (although I can accept that others may like it) but the lyrics are just so bloody WET - they're either moping because they've lost the love of their lives (because they're dicks) or they're worrying about what will happen when they lose the love of their lives (because they're dicks). Dudes, I so don't care - STFU!!! The only bearable exception is "Evergreen" because Will Young's version is tolerable (despite still being pretty wet), but the rest of this is really pretty bad.
We're at #6 in the charts this week on their fourth week of a frankly unbelievable 35 week run, with it having peaked at a depressingly believable #1 in its debut week. The top five this week were Robbie, the Gabrielle best-of, S Club 7, a Steps best-of and Blue and the highest new entry was the sadly almost completely forgotten Hearsay (#25) - never mind eh?
Wikipedia tells us this is their third album and this one goes all out on using multiple writers, with 29 used across 17 tracks! The only other thing that jumped out at me was that the album cover photo was shot in Dublin - I've heard it's the only place to go if you want to stand in a puddle at nighttime. There's no word on the critical reviews, but boy did this do well commercially, getting to #1 in Iceland, Ireland, Singapore and Sweden, with it selling 1.2 million copies here and 5.5 million copies globally.
discogs.com tells us this is another one you can pick up for fifty pence (waaaay too much!) and it's the cheapest most expensive album of the year, with no-one letting you splash out more than £8.70 on it. To sum up, in case you couldn't tell, I did not like this album - 2001 is currently not delivering an enjoyable experience.
02/12/01 - At least it was interesting
16/12/01 - Just too much cheese
