Here they come again

Continuing my trip back through the 1965 album charts.

26/09/65 : Catch Us If You Can - The Dave Clark Five

This is our first visit with the DC5 and only their second mention ever - the only other time they have come into our orbit was, quite obviously, when they had a #10 album in '20. I am aware of "Glad All Over" and that they were a big thing back in the day, but never quite managed to make it last - but I think that's as far as my knowledge of them goes, so I'm interested to see what we've got here.

It's interesting that we meet this a week after we had The Beatles' because there are definitely comparisons to be made. A lot of this album sounds like the early high-tempo stuff that stormed the Atlantic but there are also hints of quirk and slowing things down like The Beatles had also just started - I guess DC5 just didn't take things quite as far as The Beatles did in the following years. All in all, I didn't mind this - it felt very much of its time but it's all well done and there's a decent amount of variety in there.

We're at #15 in the charts this week on their last week of an eight week run, with #8 being as high as it got in its second and third weeks. The top five this week were The BeatlesTSOMMary PoppinsAndy Williams and Bob Dylan and it was a busy week for new entries with The Rolling Stones (#7), The Hollies (#19) and Cher (#20) all making an appearance.

Wikipedia doesn't have an entry for the album, which is peculiar because they have twenty albums listed and all but two of them have entries. The band's entry is also surprisingly short, especially since it starts by telling us how they were part of "the British invasion" - being the second UK band to play The Ed Sullivan show, one month after The Beatles did. The rest of the entry just lists all the various members and what Dave Clark did after they split up - he's still with us at the age of 85 and it seems like, after a long time where he wasn't interested in his legacy, he (or more likely his family) is making an effort to get this music back into the public domain.

"Customers also listened to" Del Shannon, Herman's Hermits, The Searchers and Peter & Gordon - the last of whom I've never even heard of. I had heard of The Dave Clark Five beforehand but didn't really know much about then - and having listened to this, I can't say I feel I really know much more about them. But it was all perfectly fine though.

19/09/65 - Better than expected
03/10/65 - An unexpected visit
