Through these misty eyes, I see lonely skies
Continuing my trip back through the 1986 album charts
27/07/86 : Every Beat Of My Heart - Rod Stewart
This is, somewhat surprisingly, our SIXTH visit with Rod in 2024 and our tenth visit in all, which I think means he's now safe in fifth place on the most visited list (behind Dylan and The Stones (11), Frank (12) and Elvis (15!)). I'd have to say my expectations for '86 Rod are not massively high, but every so often he pulls something out of the bag, so I've learned not to write him off.
Well, it's not terrible but it's not great - it's got a kinda US light rawk feel to it, with a load of the tracks sounding like they'd feel at home on something like the Top Gun soundtrack. The musicians are obviously skilful and they sound like they're having a blast but a whole album of it is a bit too much, I'm afraid. However, I do have to admit the title track is done well and there's also an interesting cover version of The Beatles' "In My Life" on there - but I'm fine without ever listening to this again.
We're at #8 in the charts this week on his sixth week of a decent seventeen week run, with it peaking at #5 in its third week. The top five this week were Madonna, Wham!, Chris de Burgh, Queen and Eurythmics and the highest new entry was The Communards (#25).
Wikipedia tells us that it's his fourteenth album - and that's about it! The critics weren't overly impressed (Rod had long since stopped being cool at this point) but it did surprisingly well commercially in Europe, getting to #2 in Austria, #3 in Sweden, #4 in Germany and #5 in Switzerland.
"Customers also listened to" Paul Carrack, Neil Diamond, Tina Turner and Chris Rea - I guess there's a gravelly voice connection there. I'm not Rod's biggest fan and this certainly isn't up there with his best but I think repeated visits are warming me to him, in terms of longevity if nothing else - the man has been at this for a looonnnng time now.
