We came to you big city from our little country town

Continuing my trip back through the 2017 album charts.

10/03/17 : Windy City - Alison Krauss

Our first ever visit with Alison and we've had to somewhat bend the rules to do so - not because I desperately want to listen to Alison, but you'll completely understand why when I explain later. However, I am expecting to quite like her, but also find it all a bit too much from time to time.

Hmmm - no. I like her voice, but I find the whole package too much all the time. There is country music out there that I like, but this is not it - sorry Alison. I'm also intrigued by how bad the album cover is in terms of lighting, but have to admit to a grudging respect for her hair.

We're all the way down at #6 with a new entry in the chart this week on the start of a very brief four week run (which I believe is the shortest of the year so far). The top five this week were the wildly varied Ed, (a new entry starting a run of 377 weeks in the chart - it's currently at #44), Rag'n'Bone Man, StormzyEd Sheeran and, errr, Ed Sheeran. Yes, we should have been listening to that last one (+) this week, but I really thought I've typed his name enough this year and it's not like we're not going to see it in some other year - exactly when will depend upon whether I randomly pick '11 or '12 first though. And the next highest new entry was Collabro (#7) who, as I'm sure you all remember, won the eighth season of BGT (and I would have taken Ed before I took them).

Wikipedia tells me it's her fourth album and - gah, it's an album of covers, so I could have skipped it. However, I'm pleased I listened to it (if only to confirm that I never need to listen to another one) and I only recognised "Gentle On My Mind", so it wasn't like I knew all the songs. Critically, it was very well received and commercially it did better globally than I expected, getting #17 in Ireland, #8 in Taiwan (huh?) and #9 in the US.

discogs.com tells us that you can pick up a CD for £3.50 but if you want to splash out then you're unlucky because the most you can throw at this is £9.80. I will not be spending anything on it because I did not like it, but I do have to admit she's got a lovely voice.
