First things first - I'ma say all the words inside my head
Continuing my trip back through the 2017 album charts.
30/06/17 : Evolve - Imagine Dragons
Our third visit with them Dragons - I've generally enjoyed our visits but struggled to describe exactly what it is I'm hearing. So let's expect more of the same, shall we?
Hmmm - no. This is pretty easy to explain really because it all sounds like "Believer", which is the only Imagine Dragons track I know. I like it though and I've nothing wrong with that kinda sound (it brought to mind RHCP or The Killers, which are hardly shabby points of reference) but it wasn't really what I was expecting from the previous write-ups. However, I've certainly problems with bands evolving (do you see what I did there?) and there was nothing wrong with this, so all is good.
We're at #3 with a new entry in the chart this week on the start of an impressive 73 week run - somewhat surprisingly it's only their second most successful album though, with their debut (which we have yet to meet) having spent 126 weeks in the charts. The rest of the top five are Ed Sheeran (of course),, Radiohead (a re-entry for no obvious reason), Royal Blood and Rag'n'Bone Man and we have two more new entries in the top ten for a Bee Gees best-of (#9) and DJ Khaled (#10), with a special shout-out for a re-entry for Prince (#7).
Wikipedia tells us this is their third album and it's styled ƎVOLVE - and that's pretty much about it, other than telling us that they did it after they'd done their second album. You didn't know that now, did you? The critics were mixed on it, but not entirely in a great way - they either thought it was OK or they really didn't like it with Classic Rock declaring it "comes off like Michael Bolton dad dancing to Justin Timberlake at a family wedding". Which feels a bit harsh, but I do agree there's not a lot of classic rock on display here. Commercially, it did pretty well getting to #1 in Canada, Finland, Norway, Poland, Slovakia and Switzerland - only #2 in the US though.
discogs.com tells us that you can pick up a decent version for four quid but if you want the 180gm gatefold vinyl it's going to set you back £33. And whilst there's no danger of me spending any money on it, I didn't mind it and I can see that some people will have loved it. But Classic Rock very much didn't though...
07/17/17 - Not good
