I'd like to help you but my computer isn't on
Continuing my trip down The Guardian's Top 50 TV Shows of 2024
#9 : Colin From Accounts
The first season of this winningly dry romantic comedy was such a joy that it won over seemingly the entire UK, but its second outing went one better. As well as being so stuffed with comedic brilliance that even incidental characters light up the screen – the world’s least helpful doctor! (“I’d like to help you Gordon, but my computer isn’t on”), the dog trainer who named her pet “Bark Ruffalo”! – this was the year it spread its wings and showed its huge emotional range. The creepy episode where <spoiler> wouldn’t have felt out of place in a horror anthology, the shock <spoiler> was devastatingly poignant and <spoiler> was the most excruciating piece of cringe comedy in years. What an utter delight.
Skipping over Rivals (#8 here, #7 in Empire - and surprisingly enjoyable) brings to to Colin, who is quite obviously, a god on wheels. I liked the first season, so obviously I've seen this second season, right? Errrr...
Well, no I didn't - but that's all fixed now. Like Alma's Not Normal, I don't really have anything to add from the previous post. Gordon and Ash (real life married couple Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer) are a very likeable couple and quite sweet without being overly saccharine. And I do agree with The Guardian that this series is broader than the first, but it hasn't lost its comic edge with plenty of (often quite relatable) chuckles in each episode. It also is really surprisingly emotional at times, but you can thank me for removing the very inconsiderate spoilers that The Guardian included in their review - it has quite the ending though (I think there just might be a season 3).
Yup, that's all I've gotta say really - it's not exceptional telly, but it's entertaining, relatable and very watchable and sometimes that's all you need.
