Steve, you're way behind time
Continuing my trip back through the 1965 album charts.
27/06/65 : The Seekers - The Seekers
Our FIFTH visit with The Seekers and I struggle to imagine it's going to be any better than any of the previous abominations. I couldn't find the album on my streaming platform of choice, but there are so many best-ofs that I was able to recreate it - lucky me, eh?!?
No, it's no better - but it is slightly different, relying more on their folk roots than the slightly more popped-up efforts we've previously experienced. The album starts off with "The Wreck Of The Old '97" which has a Lonnie Donegan feel to it and I was surprised to not mind at all, but they followed that up with "Danny Boy" and "Waltzing Matilda", which I feel is should be enough to scare off most casual listeners. They also manage to absolutely murder "Whisky In The Jar" later on, which is a crime I'm unable to forgive. However, I was surprised to see our second version of "500 Miles" this year (not a song I knew - it's not The Proclaimers one) - Sonny & Cher did the other one. Generally though this is, as expected, perfectly dreadful.
We're at #16 in the charts this week with a new entry - and that was the only week it ever appeared, which is slightly peculiar given that our visit with them this year spent 35 weeks in the chart. The top five this week were TSOM, Bob Dylan, Mary Poppins, Burt Bacharach and Donovan and we have one more new entry for, err, The Seekers (#14).
Wikipedia has three whole sentences on the album - it's their second album, in some countries was called Roving With The Seekers and "Waltzing Matilda" only got to #74 in Australia (which tells you all you need to know about it really). And if you think I'm going to read anything more about this lot you are sadly mistaken...
"Customers also listened to" - well, we'll never know but I can assure you it would have been dreadful. There's actually been remarkably little this year which I don't see the appeal of, but The Seekers have managed to hit that spot twice (although I can see that things were different back in the day).
20/06/65 - Back where it all began
04/07/65 - One too many for me this year...
