I was a lonely soul - I had nobody 'til I met you
Continuing my trip back through the 1965 album charts.
30/05/65 : Kinda Kinks - The Kinks
This is our third visit with The Kinks and the previous two were quite different, but I really didn't like either of them - so expectations are not high for this.
Hmmm - actually I didn't mind this, although I would say a big part of that is that at twelve tracks in 27 minutes, nothing hangs around for too long. I recognised "Tired Of Waiting For You" which I knew and quite liked, but I'm not sure I knew it was a Kinks song. I was surprised to hear a cover of "Dancing In The Street" - it doesn't feel like a Kinks kinda song (and it's not very good). I'd say the rest of it was fine enough though, although overall the sound quality isn't great - it doesn't feel like a lot of effort went into it.
We're at #13 in the charts this week on their thirteenth week of a fifteen week run, with it having peaked at #3 in its second and seventh weeks, which seems like a decent effort. The top five this week were TSOM, Bob Dylan, Mary Poppins, The Beatles and Bob Dylan and we have FOUR new entries in the chart for Donovan (#14), Marianne Faithfull (#15), Marianne Faithfull (#17 - her pop album that we now won't get to hear) and Tom Jones (#19).
Wikipedia tells us it's their second album and was recorded in two weeks when they got back from an Asian tour - which doesn't feel like something that would have happened very often back then. The band weren't happy with the results, but the record company just didn't care and put it out - it was also only available in mono, so they really didn't care! That's about it except for telling us that "Tired Of Waiting For You" got to #1 in the singles chart and some of the backing vocals on the album were supplied by "unidentified girlfriends of The Kinks".
"Customers also listened to" The Who, Small Faces, The Zombies and The Yardbirds - definite names from a certain era there. I'm not been a huge fan of The Kinks on previous visits and whilst this hasn't exactly converted me, it's certainly been a more pleasant experience.
