Under an orange sun, running from what I've become

Continuing my trip back through the 2003 album charts.

09/03/03 : Ether Song - Turin Brakes

Turin Brakes were always one of those bands I wanted to like but, whilst I never hated them, I could never quite get into them. I'm not sure I've ever listened to a whole album of theirs though, so let's see if I experience a (somewhat late) Damascene conversion.

Hmmm - no. It's got a lot of the ingredients of stuff I like - slightly fey (but not overly so) guitar-based indie with an interesting vocal style and decent enough lyrics. And I do quite like it, but it's just not clicking for me - maybe multiple listens would do the trick, but that ain't gonna happen. None of it's horrible, but it's also not that loveable for me - I do like the album cover though!

We're at an amazingly high #4 in the charts this week with a new entry on the start of a surprisingly long 16 week run - well done lads! The rest of the top five were Norah Jones,, Christina AguileraColdplay and a Tom Jones best-of with the next highest new entry being Moloko (#18).

Unsurprisingly, Wikipedia doesn't have loads on the album - it's their second album and apparently is a bit of a change from their debut. The critics were keen on it, but it didn't much away from these shores with a #99 placing in Australia being their lot.  Looking at their entry, they are duo who were childhood friends and this is their most successful album but they're still going, having released their ninth album in 2022. Apparently each album has a different sound to it, which works well for some bands but not so well for others - looking at their chart placings this is the only one I'm going to get to listen to here.

"Customers also listened to" Doves, The Electric Soft Parade, I Am Kloot and Starsailor - and there's definitely similarities with the last two here. So it you like them, then maybe check this out - I wanted to like it and I don't really know why I didn't (but I certainly didn't hate it).

02/03/03 - Could have been far, far worse
16/03/03 - A disappointing follow-up
